The aim of the book is to introduce some of the key ideas of this exciting field, using a pedagogic approach, as well as to present an overview of the field. The overall treatment is biased toward accelerators for particles moving at nearly the velocity of light, although, in covering the state of the art, we present selected examples from the low velocity applications to heavy ion accelerators
